Best Buy Price Match Policy: What You Need to Know

Best Buy's price match guarantee is one of the most powerful tools in a savvy shopper's arsenal, but many people either don't know it exists or don't understand its full scope. Here's exactly how it works and how to use it effectively.

The Basics

Best Buy will match the price of a qualifying product from a major online retailer at the time of purchase and for 15 days after your purchase. This means you can buy at Best Buy with confidence, knowing that if a competitor drops the price within two weeks, you can get the difference back.

For My Best Buy Plus and Total members, the price match window extends to 60 days, which is exceptionally generous and covers most return windows from competitors.

Which Competitors Qualify

Best Buy matches prices from major online retailers including Amazon.com, Walmart.com, Target, Costco, Home Depot, and other significant national retailers. The product must be identical — same brand, model number, and condition (new vs refurbished). They also match their own BestBuy.com prices if you bought in-store and the online price drops.

They generally won't match marketplace sellers on Amazon (only items sold by Amazon.com), auction prices on eBay, refurbished or open-box items from competitors, or prices from smaller regional or niche retailers.

How to Request a Price Match

In-store, simply show the associate the lower price on your phone. They can verify it on the spot and adjust the price at the register. Online, you can use the Best Buy chat feature or call customer service. For post-purchase adjustments, bring your receipt to customer service or call with your order number. The process is typically quick and painless — Best Buy has trained their staff to handle these requests efficiently.

Strategic Uses

The price match policy is especially valuable during competitive pricing events. During Black Friday and Prime Day, prices fluctuate rapidly across retailers. You can buy at Best Buy (taking advantage of their return policy and Geek Squad support) and then request a match if Amazon or Walmart undercuts them within your window.

It's also useful for stacking benefits. Buy at Best Buy to earn My Best Buy rewards points, use a credit card with a Best Buy bonus category, and still get the lowest price via price matching. You effectively get the best price from any retailer plus the Best Buy rewards ecosystem on top.

Limitations to Know

There are some edge cases where the policy doesn't apply. Best Buy won't match prices on items that require a membership or subscription to access (like Costco member-only pricing or Amazon Prime exclusive deals in some cases). They also won't match bundle pricing, loyalty program rewards, or prices with attached conditions like trade-in requirements. Clearance items, open-box, and limited-quantity deals are typically excluded.

Best Buy vs Other Retailers' Price Match Policies

Target also price matches select competitors but has a tighter 14-day window and a more limited list of qualifying retailers. Walmart largely eliminated their competitor price matching program and only match their own Walmart.com prices in-store. Amazon doesn't price match at all. This makes Best Buy the most consumer-friendly option when you want the flexibility of getting the lowest price without committing to a single retailer upfront.

When Barkain shows you the best price across retailers, the Best Buy price match guarantee is a factor in our calculations. If Best Buy is a few dollars more but offers a price match, better return policy, or a credit card bonus you can't get at the cheapest retailer, our recommendation reflects that full picture.
